WC 8.6.20 Home learning
I look forward to seeing some Year 6 children return to school this week, whilst others in Willow class continue their daily lessons at home.
Wherever you are doing your learning this week, we shall all be reading the same book, covering the same mathematical concepts, writing with imagination and investigating the human body and mind.
I shall publish work done in school on the class webpage, please send in work from home for me to share too. (Set up your Seesaw account or email to willow@stone-with-woodford.gloucs.sch.uk)
The school building is ready for the Year 6 children who are returning.
You probably have a timetable which works for you, but this is a suggested daily timetable if its helpful.

MATHS: Daily Lessons
YEAR 5: Most of Year 5s daily maths lessons use tutorials and worksheets from White Rose Home Learning. Click on the embedded video (the picture of the start of the video with the arrow in the middle) for each tutorial, just a little way down this page. The worksheets are all attached underneath the accompanying video. Friday's task is different, just follow the link to the Friday Family Challenge.
YEAR 6: You are starting a new maths topic this week: algebra. There is a YouTube introduction to watch at the start of the week, which gives a good explanation of what algebra is. Then I have recorded short introduction videos for Monday and Tuesday's lessons for you to watch before you tackle the worksheets. Thursday are Friday's lessons are different and outlined in the table below.
There are still all the Fluent in 5 sheets and the times table sheets if you complete the White Rose work quickly. (Find these on the You Might Like... tab) SUMDOG is there too, for some maths and gaming time!

TODAY'S CHAPTER OF EVERNIGHT, BY Ross Mackenzie
Chapter 35: The Black Bird
ENGLISH
READING: This week we will share chapters 31-35 of EVERNIGHT, by Ross Mackenzie. (If there is anyone who hasn't started listening, listen along from chapter 1 and catch up with us) On our edublog https://stonewithwoodford.edublogs.org/ there is a new padlet where everybody needs to complete a written response after listening each day. In the table below and also above the padlet it explains what you need to write. Mrs McCalmont and I will post comments and you can also add comments to each other's posts some days.
Padlet task: https://stonewithwoodford.edublogs.org/ |
|
Mon 8th June |
Chapter 31: A Journey Begins Your challenge is to draw a story map of this chapter including the characters that come into this part of the story - and there are quite a few. You may need to listen through one then take a notebook and pen and write down the sequence of actions and the characters to help you complete the task. Don't forget to use colour and some useful words and phrases might help as well. |
Tues |
Chapter 32: Blood on the Table Your challenge is to write what Shadow Jack might have written in his journal at the end of this day. Think about how he must have felt, I'm sure that there were many emotions. As the pieces of this jigsaw of a story come together, he realises that his actions have consequences. |
Wed |
Chapter 33:Flight of the Witches Your challenge is to present the arguments for and against an early attack on the Evernight before it can gather enough of an army to devastate all that is in front of it - including their haven - the Westerly Witch. What would you advise the Council to do? Are they being reckless? Is it a battle that they can win? |
Thu |
Chapter 34:Spell Writing Your challenge is to create your own spells for light. Each of you is different so different things will be significant for you. You can either draw the spell using symbols or you may write it. Remember to upload your picture if you do it that way. |
Fri |
Chapter 35: The Black Bird As Lara and Double Eight spent some time together on the edge of an adventure with no way of knowing what the outcome will be, they discover strange things about each other that draw them together. What do they have in common? What has happened to them that will help to create a friendship and an invisible link of understanding. |
WRITING
POBBLE365: How about writing from a Pobble365 picture prompt? On Pobble365 there is a picture for every day of the year. This week's 5 pictures, with their associated ideas, are attached below. Type your piece into edublog or write it and send it via Seesaw. CLICK HERE TO GO STRAIGHT TO TODAY'S POBBLE365 PICTURE AND IDEAS
100 WORD CHALLENGE: You should also complete the 100 word challenge CLICK HERE FOR 100 WORD CHALLENGE (if you post your writing on edublog we can see it there OR you might prefer to write on paper and use the Seesaw app to send me a photo of your work!)
RADIOBLOGGING: Listen daily at 9:30-10:30 (or later if you can't listen live) to Pie Corbett and Deputy Mitchell on Radioblogging.net and join in with all the fun things to do. Each programme starts with a couple of games to have a go at, then they often have a visiting author or poet who reads some of their work and you get the chance to comment on what you hear. There is also the chance for you to work on your best sentences and post them on a post-it on a padlet. The main writing tasks are explained near to the end of the programme; you complete 1 or more of these and post it onto the site for us and other people to read and comment on later. FOR RADIOBLOG CLICK HERE
WRITING PROJECTS: Another idea for those of you who don't always have use of a computer for the radioblog or those who are looking for new writing ideas, I have attached 2 booklets of writing tasks (called THE GAME and MARIA RHI), where a 'virtual teacher' guides you through tasks. You don't have to do every task, but there are some great ones to try. If you submit them to edublog we can see them, or if you are working on paper, why not photograph your writing and send it to me on Seesaw? (See the tab on how to use Seesaw)
SPELLING: Find this week's lists attached below. Remember that a little practice each day is needed, then test yourself on Friday. You can also do SUMDOG spelling games.
THIS WEEK'S TOPIC: Science and PSHCE
As this term's topic work is science focussed we continue our science theme of The Human Body- learning more about how the circulatory system works. You will make a paper and wool model of the heart and a circulation wheel. These demonstrate the journey of the oxygen rich and oxygen poor blood around the body. (If you did not complete the science work in the WC 11.5.20 or WC 1.6.20 then it would be sensible to do that workfirst, as this week's work follows on)
The other half of the topic work is PSHCE/science. There is a June well-being mat, with a short idea for every day of the month. Also, 2 new Facts4Life activity mats, which think about riding life's ups and downs and links to videos about humans having eggs and poo- our amazing bodies!
SCIENCE: THE HUMAN BODY
TASK 1: Make your own model of a human heart
Make a Model of the Heart
USE WILL NEED:
- a printed copy of the "have a heart" sheet
- a pair of scissors
- cellotape
- approx 1m of red wool
- approx 1m of blue wool
WHAT TO DO
- Cut out the heart along the solid black lines.
- Cut out the 4 hatched ovals (labelled cut out on the sheet)
- YOU WILL NOW SHOW THE JOURNEY OF BLOOD, WHICH HAS BEEN AROUND THE BODY AND USED UP ALL ITS OXYGEN, AS IT GETS ITS FINAL HEART PUMP BACK TO THE LUNGS TO GET SOME MORE OXYGEN. Hold the end of the blue wool - which represents the deoxygenated blood travelling to and from the heart- behind the "from body" on the far left.
- Feed it into the upper atrium, through the cut out hole. Then feed it out of the heart at the top, through the "to lungs" hole. Allow equal amounts of slack to hang out of each hole.
- Tape down the blue wool as shown in picture 1 below.
- Repeat steps 3,4 and 5 with red wool - which represents the oxygenated blood - on the right side of the heart. THIS WILL SHOW THE JOURNEY OF THE BLOOD WHICH HAS JUST COLLECTED ITS SUPPLY OF OXYGEN FROM THE LUNGS AS IT IS NOW PUMPED TO SET OFF AROUND THE BODY. See picture 2

TASK 2: Make a circulation wheel to show how the circulatory system works
Make a Circulation Wheel
YOU WILL NEED:
- printed copies of circulation wheel (top) and circulation wheel (bottom)
- scissors
- 1 paper fastener (split pin)
- cellotape
- red and blue pencils or pens
HOW TO MAKE THE CIRCULATION WHEEL
First, colour the blood vessels on the model. Blue for deoxygenated blood, red for oxygenated blood. This is tricky - so look carefully and follow these instructions:
- Start with your blue pencil on the word BLUE on the boy's right ankle
- Continue to colour the path of blood in blue until you come to an X
- At the X swap for a red pencil and colour.
- Switch colour between red and blue at each X. (The small letter Rs and Bs along the way will help you)
- Cut out both circles on the 2 pages.
- Cut out the hatched square on the top (slightly smaller) wheel.
- Place the slightly smallet wheel on top of the larger wheel so the black dots in their centre line up. (Holding up to the window makes this easier)
- Push the paper fastener/split pin through the dots at the centre. Turn the model over and fold back the ends of the paper fastener.
