Week 5

Hello all! We've made it through another week, hurrah!

Learning Project

The project this week aims to provide opportunities for your child to learn more about food. Learning may focus on where different foods originate from, what makes a healthy meal, opportunities to cook etc.

 

5 A Day

Support your child to create a food diary to record how many pieces of fruit and vegetables they eat in a day. They could write these using their phonics knowledge or draw a picture of each item. See if they can try something new. 

Collage

Ask your child to draw out a number of fruits or vegetables, large enough to fill a piece of A4 paper. Provide them with a selection of colourful packaging (if possible). Can they cut out their drawings and make a collage with them and the packaging? 

Food Shop

Using toy food if you have any, or old packaging, or just food from your cupboard, set up a food shop for your child to act out being the shopkeeper and customer. You could introduce coins to support their developing knowledge of money. Give them a notepad to use as a shopping list to encourage in the moment writing. You could also get them to write a price list.

Patterns

Using a selection of vegetables available in your kitchen, support your child to print and explore the shapes and patterns created.

Obviously, this might not be possible or practical in lockdown, so an alternative to vegetables could be - hands, rocks from the garden, cups, toes - basically, anything you can dip in paint will work! If you don't have any paint, wait for a sunny day and dip things in water and make a pattern on the dry pavement.

Cornflower Goop

Mix cornflour with a small amount of water in a mixing bowl. It will make a slimy, stretchy mixture. Allow your child to explore the change of texture from wet to dry and the texture of the gloop.

Again, this might not be possible if you don't have any cornflower or you need to save it, or if like me there is a shortage of anything remotely related to baking (eggs are like gold dust in Bristol. All I want is a dippy egg!). Skip this one if you can't source any cornflower, or use some mud from the garden if you're lucky enough to have a garden.

Look at recipe books and food magazines. Encourage your child to use their phonics knowledge to decode the ingredients list. Select a recipe and make this together. Encourage your child to read the labels on packaging to figure out which ingredient it is.

 

 

Read a variety of books at home. Favourites can be repeated. Hearing the patterns of language in a story will support your child’s language development.

 

Children to read to parents daily. Visit Oxford Owl for free eBooks that link to your child’s book band. You can create a free account. Complete the linked Play activities for each book.

 

With your child, look in magazines, newspapers and books for the tricky words they are currently learning. They could use a highlighter to highlight in magazines and newspapers.

  • Watch a Numberblocks clip each day at: BBC or CBeebies. Use this link https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/52060 to give you ideas on what to do with your children whilst watching an episode.
  • Explore weighing and measuring food on the kitchen scales. Ask, what happens as you place more on the scales?
  • Look for numerals on packaging you find around the house. Can your child recognise the numerals and count out a matching amount?

Pour flour, rice or lentils into a shallow tray or plate. Show your child a letter, digraph, trigraph or tricky word and ask them to ‘write it’ in the food using their finger.

Play any Phase 2/Phase 3 games.

 

Sing Nursery Rhymes and songs together. Add in actions and change the words. Can children think of different rhyming words to add in? Repeat old favourites and learn new rhymes.

 

Daily phonics - Practice the sounds your child is working on and blend words. This can be oral blending (e.g. spoken out loud c-a-t) or written if appropriate. We have learnt all phase 2, and phase 3 – j,w,y,v,x,z,qu,th,sh,ch,ng,ee,ai,igh,oa,oo

 

 

Using recipes from books as a guide, ask your child to create their own recipe for their dream meal. They could draw out the ingredients and label them and draw the finished meal. Some children may be able to write a few short sentences as instructions.

Look at a range of different packages found around the kitchen. Discuss with your child what makes it stand out to a customer. Support them to design a package for a treat of their choice.

 

Practice name writing. Can they write their first name? Middle name? Surname?

 

Practice forming the letters of the alphabet.

 

Ask your child to write out the tricky words they are working on at the moment on pieces of paper.

 

 

Story Thoughts

I have been sharing stories on youtube for you enjoy, but now I want to hear from you.

When we share at story at school, we talk about our story thoughts.

This means we talk about 4 things:

  • something we like about the story - characters, things that happened, specific words, etc.
  • something we dislike about the story.
  • puzzles - something that made us wonder. We always start our sentence with "I wonder..." e.g. I wonder why Bob didn't notice the aliens.
  • connections - anything the story reminded us of e.g. "It reminded me of Red Riding Hood because there was a wolf" or "It reminded me of when we go to Cattle Country because of the big slides".

For each story you share with me, I'd love for you to pop some story thoughts up on the Padlet.

Yoga

In school, I do yoga with my class at least once a week, and now we are at home it is something that I would love to continue. It is a great way to give yourself some time to stop, be present in your own body without a million things going on inside your head, and to do some movement that isn't 1000 jumping jacks.

There will be a new one up every Monday evening for you to have a go at whenever suits you.

Extra Learning 

For anyone who feels that they fancy doing a little bit more!

  • Write a story about someone who builds a magical machine which can take them anywhere. Where would you go? What would you do?      

 

  • Write numbers on a number line, it doesn’t have to start with 0.                    

 

  • Create a tally chart of how many cans of soup or veg you have in your cupboards.

                    

  • Count how many time s you can do something. Each time see if you can break your own record. Use a stop watch to time how long it takes you to run around the garden or walk up and down the stairs. Use a timer to see who can do the most star jumps or other exercise.

 

  • Draw or paint a picture of yourself as a grown up. Write a label to add to it explaining what job you will be doing or how you will have changed.
