Good morning Chestnut Class and welcome back to a brand new week of online learning. It's been great to have received work from you showing us what you have been learning at home. We hope you have enjoyed seeing everyones pictures as we celebrate all our sucesses. Please remember we dont expect you to be teachers for your children at home. All we ask is that you provide the time and resources for your children to be able to access these tasks. Remember that we are always here if you need to email us to ask questions.

Story thoughts and questions
As we share our stories with you on our Youtube channels we would love to hear your thoughts on them. This link takes you to Chestnut Class' padlet where you can share your thoughts or questions on the books we read. It is particularly good for commenting on our chapter books. The other children in our class can read your commnets and reposnd to them or "like" them.
Once you follow the link below, just click on the add symbol, type your child's name and the story you're watching (or let them see if they can type) in the 'Title' section, then type your child's story thoughts in the box that says 'write something'. Once you've done that, click anywhere on the screen and it will pop your thought up.
Things you could comment on:
- What you like or dislike about the story.
- What words or phrases you thought were brilliant.
- How you felt about the characters.
- Did it remind you of any other stories?

Year 1 phonics ( also useful for Year 2 to brush up on their sounds) As a continuation of last weeks work, The Dept of Education has set up a series of phonics lessons on YouTube based on Letters and Sounds which many schools use to teach phonics. It has been set up for parents to use at home with their children.
Most of our children will know most if not all of the sounds already but it is always a great idea to refresh and practise them on a daily basis so that they become embedded and automatic.
We really hope it is helpful to you all. It is honestly quite straightforward and key to children continuing to become fluent readers.

Continue to work on practising the high frequency words that were given at the start of the home-learning packs. When you have started to recite them all you can begin to move on to the following spelling activities.
Year 2 will be spelling words ending in ment and ness.
Year 1 will be spelling ed and ing words.

This weeks English work is from the Talk for Writing website by Pie Corbett. Pie has been working with children for many many years and is resposible for the radio blogging work that happens every morning at 9:30. If you havent visited the radio blogging site then please do. Many of our children at school are visitors every day and are posting work for us to see and comment on. Their work is sometimes read out to all the listeners and other teachers and pupils can also read and comment on work. Its a fantastic opportunity for children to improve their writing and become part of something greater during this isolating time. White Rose Home Learning
The White Rose maths home learning has changed and you now have to have a subscription to access the resources. Our school has already paid for this premium subscription so that you can still access the resources at home.
The resources will not be available next to the videos on their home page as they have done before, but we have included them here for you to download. The link below will take you to the home learning page where you click on the relevant year group and then make sure you choose the correct date for this week (11th May Week 4).
Science- Seed dispersal
We hope you have been enjoying getting out in the garden and exploring your garden or local area looking for plants. Last week I asked if you could start collecting some seeds for this weeks work.
If you have had a chance to collect some seeds then this weeks task is to spread the seeds out on a tray and with an adult look closely at the seeds and discuss how they are different. Think about the shape, size, colour and texture. If you have a magnifying glass then use this to help you. Have a go at drawing or painting the seeds to show their differences.
If you have lots of different seeds then please sort them into fruit, seeds or flower.
Think about the seeds in fruit, why are they here? what is important about them?
Here's the scientific part!
Explain to the children how pollen is dispersed by bees and insects. (Plants produce flowers to make seeds. To make a seed a flower must be pollinated. Pollen from the male part of one flower travels to the female part of another flower where the seeds are made.The petals act like an adveritsemt to attract varous animals, which will carry the pollen from one flower to another. The flowers turn into fruiting bodies which protect the seeds.)
Below is a sheet for you to look at together. It has pictures of seeds and some question prompts to discuss with your child about how seeds travel on animals. It also has instructions about how to make dandelion seeds and heliocopter seeds which are good fun for flying races.

Give the children 4 heart outlines. They must draw, colour or stick images on that show a heart that is afraid, ill or worried using 3 of the hearts.
Talk about what they have expressed. Tell them Jesus' promise to his disciples from John 14:27 "My peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.''
Jesus' first followers went through many troubles but they had peace in their hearts. Christians today find peace in their faith too. Christians say "Jesus is good news because he gives his followers peace".
For music this week please continue with the out of the ark resources. we are on week 3 now on this website.
Listen to Delibse, Flower duet from lakme.
As our topic is plants, this is a flower inspired peice of music from the opera. At this point in the opera, Lakme and her servant Mallika sing as they gather flowers by the river.
As you listen to this piece of music I would like you to create a garden/flower picture using paints or pencil or anything else you wish to use. Listen to the music to inspire your work.
Continuing the theme of 2D to 3D, why not use this tutorial to really make your letters and words stand out. You have had a go with patterns and explored Op Art now we move onto the tricks of graphics. We really hope you have a go.
Write your name or why not use your new skills to make a stand out thank you poster for the key workers in your area?
