Week 10

Hello everyone!

This week we will continue with a blend of Radioblogging, Pobble365 and book talking tasks to build our english skills. We are looking at triangles in Maths and giving presentations as part of Science. There are short (10-20 minute) afternoon tasks to complete too to help you become really confident when giving presentations!

This week's work.

We will do a class Zoom call at 11, all together! Please make sure you are up to date on the chapters and do your best to attend as we will be doing a quick book quiz, reading chapter 20 and setting our writing task for Friday after doing some book talk all together. Please try and sit somewhere quiet so we don't interupt one another with any extra noise!

Again, I will be in school Monday - Thursday supporting the keyworkers so I will try my best to respond to emails but it will be difficult. I have spent the weekend catching up with everyones work and I've been so impressed!

If you do have questions, send me an email and I will do my best to reply as quickly as I can to you.

oak@stone-with-woodford.gloucs.sch.uk

Up until now I haven't set a timetable for the work, letting people have some flexibility to complete tasks in the order they choose, but if your child is returning to school in the keyworker class part time please try and follow the timetable to allow an easier teaching day within the keyworker class as at times there will be children from years 1-6. Thank you.

English Writing

This week I have tried to vary the tasks so that we have a bit of a difference for the kids. We will do a mix of radioblogging and handwritten tasks this week. I would like to see work published by them on the radioblog for the days it is set, and photos of their handwritten tasks by email on the Friday please.

Wednesday

Writing your wave poem.

I have attached a sheet with an example of a poem I have written about wind. I have focused on giving the wind a personality and using personification. I have highlighted the different elements and provided a key to help you see where the different writing tools have been used.

Use the style of the poem to help you to write your own for the waves. Look at how I have given the wind a different paragraph in each of the verses. Could you do the same for the sea/waves?

Chapter twenty-one - The long wait.

Monday's task

Describe a time you had to wait. How did you pass the time? How did it feel? Were you patient? What happened when you finally got the thing you had waited for?

Chapter twenty-two - Operation fruit burst

Tuesday's task

Write an advertisement for the dragon hunting adventures.

Write an advert for the dragon hunting expedition. Imagine you are selling it to people as a holiday. You want to think about the positives and perhaps a deal. Remember to tell them the activities they could get up to on this adventure!

Chapter twenty-four - Here be dragons!

Thursday's task

Today you get to hatch your very own dragon!

I am looking for a lot of effort with the detail of it's features and time describing it's wings, tail, horns or spikes and an extra feature that makes your dragon stand out. Remember it has only just hatched so it is the size of your hand.

Friday's task.

Maths tasks

Exploring triangles.

This week year 3 and 4 will be following the same learning again as we continue with our Shape topic. Monday and Tuesday should be mostly revision and reminding of their learning from last year.

Day of the week Learning required Task to be completed.
Monday

Learning about the three different types of triangles.

Watch the video below

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4rySgvfDQU

Create a poster that explains the rules of the three different types of triangles.

You need to be confident explaining:

- isosceles

- equilateral

- scalene

Tuesday

Understanding that angles play a part in triangle sorting.

Watch the video below, it explains about the three types of triangles but also explains how angles play a part too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQUTVgT9RXY&t=25s

Complete the activity sheet on recognising the different triangles.

Complete the Sumdog Triangles challenge

Wednesday

Sorting triangles

Review the videos on triangles to refresh your memory

Complete the sorting activity by cutting out the triangles. Try using the different Venn diagrams to sort the triangles.

Thursday

Problem solving with triangles.

Try warming up by creating a triangle sheet. Using a ruler draw lines that criss-cross a piece of paper. Draw about 12 lines that go in different directions across the page. How many triangles did you make? Can you colour code them using a key to identify them?

Have a go at the problem solving sheet.

See how far you can get, some of the questions require trial and error and you need to keep trying to prove your answer.

Friday

Friday triangle challenge!

Today is about seeing how you can use your knowledge of triangles to solve different problems.

Science

What plants need to thrive.

Day of the week Task
Monday

Germination

Today we are going to learn what happens when seeds germinate and start to grow. Watch the video below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFPyue5X3Q

Think about what you've learnt from the video. Can you draw a diagram to show what a seed needs to grow.

Tuesday

How do plants get the things they need to grow?

Read the sheet below to find out about 3 seeds who use different dispersal ways to get themselves to a place where they can grow succesfully.

Think about one of the types of seeds we learnt about last week. Can you write a fact sheet about one of them. Think about why they travel that far, why might it be important?

Wednesday

Planning a presentation

For the rest of this week your challenge is to create a verbal (spoken) presentation about a plant!

Today you need to decide which plant you would like to focus on and gather the information you need. You might want to spend time doing research into your plant.

Include details about the different stages of its growth, what the flowers look like, what type of pollinators might visit it, what its seeds are like and how they spread.

Thursday

Start creating your presentation.

Think about where you want to start with your presentation. Use the language sheet to help you look at which scientific words would be the best to include. Don't forget to rehearse what you are going to say.

Friday

Give your presentation.

Today you are going to give your presentation to someone in your family. If you're feeling confident you could have someone record you and email me the video. Have them sit with the language sheet and see which words you are confident using.

Afternoon Tasks

This weeks afternoon tasks are based around public speaking. In science this week the target is for the kids to give a presentation about their knowledge of plants to their families. Here are a series of tasks and videos to help them along with their planning and to help them rehearse!

Day of the week Learning  Task to complete
Monday

How do you feel about speaking in public?

Today is about thinking about making presentations. At the end of the week you will be giving one to yout family about plants. All of the afternoon tasks are about building your skills when giving a presentation.

Take a piece of paper and split in half.

On one side write things about times you felt confident, they may or may not be about speaking.

On the otherside write times when you felt less confident.

Talk with an adult about these things, do you feel more confident about them now? What has changed? What could help you feel more confident - more practice or a smaller amount of people?

Tuesday

Tips for public speaking

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUgwc2WlPrk&list=PLFEqR5zh7HWoGGyPW60CRfNYf9FCfgyrY&index=5

watch the video and think about a time you had to speak infront of others. What do you think went well? What could you improve on this week?

Wednesday

How to give a presentation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IbheB2-ixM

Plan your entrance for your science presentation. What will you start with? How will you stand?

Have a practice!

Thursday

How to use your hands in a presentation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX_DAFXQxpc

Practice the different hand gestures. Where might you use them in your presentation?

Have a practice!

Friday

Presentation rehearsal time!

Create an audience with teddy bears either in your room or on the sofa. Practice your presentation on plants on the bears.

Think about how long your presentation is. Have you used the scientific words? How are you standing?

Rehearse until you feel confident and then give your presentation to your family! Good luck!
