TODAY'S CHAPTER FROM EVERNIGHT: Chapter 5 The Doomsday Spell

ENGLISH

READING: We are very excited to be starting a brand new class book. It's called EVERNIGHT and is written by Ross Mackenzie (author of The Nowhere Emporium). Listen on my YouTube channel, a chapter each day. You can read along with chapters 1 & 2 using the document attached below.  On our edublog https://stonewithwoodford.edublogs.org/ there is a padlet set up where everybody needs to add their first impressions of the book. We can't wait to see what you think...

DAY PADLET QUICK TASK https://stonewithwoodford.edublogs.org/
Monday

Evernight - what are your first impressions?

What you liked about the opening chapter?

What you thought about the main characters?

What puzzled you?

Tuesday

You have just read Chapter 2 of Evernight. It’s an exciting episode and introduces the reader to Lara.
What makes Lara so interesting? What is it about her actions that tell us a bit about the sort of character she is?

Wednesday

Chapter 3: THE RATS In this chapter we find out a bit more about Lara and her friends.

Your task is to draw up a job description for a tosher. When you are ready to write just click on the pink circle, write in your name and get going with your ideas!

You need to think about how to organise your ideas - you might want to make some notes before you write or do a brain storm or mind map?

What is a tosher?

What do they do? Why?

What necessary skills do they need?
Do they need any special qualifications or experience?

What equipment would be needed for the job - do they get that provided?

Any other unusual information - working hours ?
What sort of personal qualities might be needed to do the job - courageous, cautious, sense of humour, determination .......?

Thanks to Tiana for her picture that I could use as a background- great idea.

Thursday

Chapter 4: The King's Witch. In this chapter we meet Mrs Hester for the first time. We get some idea about her true nature right from the start.
She creates a spell with powerful transformation properties. The final ingredient is a single hair but what else is in there that could cause such a dramatic result?

Please write on the post it what you think might be the essential ingredients for the spell.

Hit the pink button to select a post it and get writing.

Top tip: You can edit your padlet, if you make a mistake, by selecting the 3 little dots  at the top right hand side of your padlet. Remember, before you publish, read your work aloud to help you check it.

You can comment on your classmates fantastic writing when your done.

Friday

Evernight - Chapter 5 - The Domesday Spell

What a cracking title - This part gives you some important infomation that moves the story on a pace.

Your task is to consider the additional information that we read about Shadow Jack and put on the padlets what you know about him so far. Is he a devoted slave or a nasty villain? Why?

Hit the pink button to select a post it and get writing. Don't forget to look at the comments on your work from yesterday. If you make a comment remember to put your first name too.

Reading Comprehension: Your parents will have received an email with a login for you to use an online comprehension website https://readtheory.org/  It starts with a few questions to match the texts to you- so read carefully and do your best. After that you can get really started. We can see how you are getting on when we login.

WRITING:  Your writing work this week is to listen at 9:30-10:30 (or later if you can't listen live) to Pie Corbett on Radioblogging.net and join in with all the fun things to do. There are short activities which you add to a padlet and then longer tasks which you can start during the programme and complete after the show has ended. All the teachers from Stone are listening, commenting on your writing and also taking part! Several children have been listening and contributing during the Easter break too- but now its time for everyone in Willow class to get involved. The world can see the work that you do. We can't wait to see it!  Just click on the link below

Topic: This week's topic work is science, continuing our work on MICRO ORGANISMS

SHORT TASKS:

  1. Get yourself in the mood, by listening (and singing along if you fancy) to the Micro-organism song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHvHww1tNnA
  2. Watch BBC Bitesize clip  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zfxxsbk/articles/zsgtrwx then scroll down and fill in the gaps to check your knowledge.
  3. Read and learn more about micro-organisms on https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/micro-organisms
  4. Carry out the quiz on https://www.educationquizzes.com/ks2/science/microorganisms/
  5. Remember setting up the bread experiment in school? We were investigating the question, How does washing our hands affect the number of micro-organisms on our hands?

LONGER TASK part 1:

Write an investigation plan for the experiment we set up in school together using the subtitles we use in class (a copy of the blank planning sheet is attached below, or simply write it up on paper using these subtitles to save on printing)

  • Our question: How does washing our hands affect the number of micro-organisms on our hands?
  • We will change this factor
  • We will measure
  • We will keep these factors the same to make our test fair
  • My prediction
  • Equipment

LONGER TASK part 2: Look at the photographs in the results table (DOCUMENT ATTACHED BELOW)- zoom in on your screen to get a really good look.

Remember that the control slice is there to tell us what would have happened to the bread if nobody had touched the slice it at all.

The dirty hands slice was rubbed thoroughly with hands.

The washed hands slice was rubbed with the same hands, after they had been washed with soap and water for over 20 seconds.

Look closely at each slice of bread for each day. Can you see which slice changes first? Can you say when it changed? How effective is washing hands to remove bacteria?

Write your own conclusion to the experiment. Remember that you need to answer the question which we set out to investigate- How does washing our hands affect the number of micro-organisms on our hands?

You can write it independently or use this scaffolding to help you…

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

At the start of the experiment………………………...

The first slice to grow mould on it was …………. which started to grow on day ………. Each day after that…………..

The slice touched by washed hands…….

The control slice shows that if bread is not touched by human hands then….

We can therefore conclude that mould grew because…….

I can also conclude that washing hands…………..

Are you allowed to carry out this investigation at home? Or, if you are feeling really brave, you could compare different surfaces: which places do you think will be the cleanest and have the least bacteria or have the most bacteria? You could wipe a slice on your computer/tablet, wipe a slice on your toilet seat, wipe a slice on your kitchen worksurface etc    See which surfaces have the most bacteria so grow the most mould! (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PERMISSION FROM A PARENT! Remember to wash your hands thoroughly and keep the mouldy bread in bags-don’t open them!)

This website suggests a version of the mould on bread experiment you could try https://explorable.com/mold-bread-experiment

Extra task ideas:

  • Why not design a poster, encouraging people to wash their hands- include how to do it thoroughly and explain why it is so important.
  • You could compose your own micro-organism song or poem. Include new facts that you have learnt and try to make it fun to sing-a-long. (You could teach it to your parents too!)
  • Make models of micro-organisms with playdoh or plasticene. (Do an online search for models of micro-organisms or microbes to see their shapes close up.)
